Minimalist Camping - Shelter Building

July 17 Jess Wilde from GO Wilde Adventures will teach us some minimalist camping techniques! Do you want to pack a lighter bag? Do you forget complex knots? Do you love affordable camping? We will make shelters with tarps and garbage bags. We will go over several quick shelter setups and their pros and cons. Please bring paracord and a knife if you have them.


Itinerary: Day camp for adults and children alike! 10 different presentations as well as farm experiences. Each Friday morning begins with animal care - cow, goats, ducks and chickens followed by gardening - planting, weeding, seed saving, and harvesting. This is followed by nature bathing (solitude, introspection and nature awareness).

Break for lunch (bring your own).

Afternoons are spent learning from the presenter of the day. 


To bring: Bring your lunch, water for the entire day, snacks and hand sanitizer. Sun hats, sunscreen, natural bug repellant.


COVID safety: We will be outdoors with a minimum of 2 meters between co-habitants. We have two outdoor composting sawdust toilets. You will bring your own hand sanitizer.


In case of rain: Thursday before an email will go out, if needed we will postpone til the following Monday. If that too is not possible, you will get a choice of refund or applying to another Friday class if there is room.


Families: children will need to be adequately interested in the topic to pay attention or direct them elsewhere (with a supervising adult). Include ages of children in the email.


Registration: Suggested donation starting at $30 per person per session, or starting at $250 for all 10. Registration by etransfer to borchfam@hotmail.com with the topic and date of your choosing and your name. You can pay part ahead of time and more on the day. Minimum 10 people.

It is much easier to 'be in nature' if you are comfortable!
Let's mix some knowledge and a little skill and using (mostly) natural materials to create comfort in the bush!
We are going to play with an array of techniques, skills, tips, and tricks, with some hands-on.
Dress in clothing that is adequate, for the day, bring a knife if you have and your own water bottle, snacks and hand sanitizer

July 10 Jen Weibel is a Cabinetmaker by trade with a passion for natural and sustainable building techniques. We will use wood and plant stems to create a nesting box for native bees to call home and pollinate your garden! Learn some basic carpentry skills and about native bees! Leave with a nesting box of your own to hang at home for next years growin. We will be playing with power tools so please bring your own safety glasses, pencil and tape measure if you have

July 24 Jess Wilde Again! Fire making: Do you want to light a fire in wet conditions? Do you want to learn about some different fire starting options? We will look at techniques for lighters, single match, home made fire starters, store bought waterproof options, and what to look for in the woods. Please bring a knife if you have one

July 31 Join us for an engaging and interactive Metis experience with Felice Gladue from Metis ALIVE. Explore Metis history through stories and artifact examination. Create a mini handwoven sash to take home and tap your toes to the lively tunes of Metis fiddle music while you learn the Red River Jig.

Aug 7 Dana Rayment is an Edmonton based artist, Pilates owner and teacher and chaplain at NAIT. Mushroom hunting is her oldest hobby. It began with family excursions when just being able to walk into owning over 20 books to expanding into learning mushrooms beyond edibles and poisons, to joining 2 mushroom clubs. Still learning but make mushroom liquors, butters, powders, dry, freeze, pickle, oil, can and cook with them each year.

Aug 14 Maryann Borch will show, using that morning's fresh milk and home fed starter culture, to make a mozzarella and a basic soft spreadable cream cheese. Milk and curd handling will be emphasized with the chance for some hands on given it will be HOT, and safe from the Covid virus. Outside cooking. Demo style until the very end. Bring a small metal bowl in which your curd can be placed so you can get a feel for the process.

Aug 21 Markster Composter grew up gardening but only recently discovered soil. He is fascinated by all the life in soil and works every day to protect it. He'll bring enough supplies for every household to build a small worm bin to take home. Mark has taught this topic as part of the Grade 4 curriculum. Teachers welcome

Aug 28 - Cattail Basketry - Maryann will soak locally harvested cattail leaves and teach a basic twill design for a bottom and randing for the sides. A Simple border you can finish at home will be demonstrated. Please Bring your own Scissors and sewing pins with large heads for securing to the forms.
